Ijusi-25: Fear

July 27th, 2010

From the Brief:

“FEAR:
The blank canvas, the blinking cursor – as creatives we fear “the void” like the whites feared the swart gevaar. Too much artistic freedom means frazzled nerve endings and never enough time. This subject can extend to the fear of crime or organised religion; terrorist attacks or failure. Fear is, and always will be, an intrinsic emotion to us as humans.”

mouse driven ion thruster intergalactic space ship thing

dun dun daaaa!

I’m a designer who is fascinated with Science.

Somehow as a complete amateur I believe that through obsessive consumption of sites like physorg.com and wikipedia I can train myself to spot solutions to man’s ever growing needs. Or problems. But that depends on how you look at things. And in an effort to remember my hair-brained schemes and with the view to possible feedback I’m going to start posting them.

MAD IDEA 1: Mouse Drive

An ion thruster can propel a space ship through space using tiny but consistent force to steadily increase velocity of said spaceship through a vacuum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_thruster

Your limitation is how much gas you can put on board as fuel.

Solution 1:

You can attempt to harvest the vast amounts of gas in space.
But it is a bit haphazard as to where these clouds are and at what density.

Solution 2:

You use mice.

That turn wheels to get food thereby generating electricity to power the drive.
Droppings fertilize plants. Urine is distilled into water. Residue becomes fuel/fertiliser.
Plants make oxygen and food. Food is harvested. Food feeds mice as reward for turning wheels.
If perfectly managed the system could carry on for quite some time.

A micro version of the human condition really.

DISCLAIMER:
I don’t really want to make a mouse drive. And would have ethical issues with putting mice into space to live in a micro self sustaining environment. Even if it simulated the perfect mousey nirvana. it would be Cruel and Wrong.

Unless of course we could speak to mice. We brought it up as if in casual conversation. They got really really excited.

And the Mice volunteered.

P.S.

I first read about ion thrusters many years ago so my knowledge was shaky to begin with. After reading the wiki entry myself it seems that grid degradation is more of an issue than fuel limit. So in addition to my above proposal I add spiders that weave new grids daily. And cockroaches to feed them. And that’s all I can think of for now.

Character Design for Crayon

March 23rd, 2010

Crayon wanted to spice up their creds docs with a selection of character that were cute and approachable, without being syrupy sweet.

I’ve been busy working for Orange Labs doing UI and visual design work for iPhone and Android apps. All strictly signed to secrecy though. So in the interim I’m going to give you some bits and bobs I’ve done over the past year.

Our fantastic Boris snowman

SNOW IN LONDON 2009: and a boris johnson snowman

We made a Boris Johnson Snowman in front of the mayor’s office! To our great surprise and mild consternation it appeared on the Guardian’s blog the following day albeit heavily modified by unknown and possibly official vandals.

Snow really makes winter in London vastly more enjoyable. When else can you sculpt fun things anywhere?

warp-and-woof coat of arms

October 13th, 2008

Kut Communications London decided to rebrand and relaunch
themselves as Warp and Woof. They wanted something
traditional with gravitas, as well as a good sense of fun. This
is the new logo I designed for them. I’ll post the rest of the
rebranding project here as soon as it’s launched officially.

I made this rather strange animation as a student and won some awards for it. The story was made up by strangers. I would walk around and ask people what should happen next.
